The brother of detained Nigerian activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) has come forward with a disturbing update following his arrest by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The arrest, which took place at a GTBank branch, has stirred significant reactions on social media, with many Nigerians calling for transparency and accountability.
According to reports, VDM was apprehended after accompanying his mother to the bank to report suspicious and repeated debits from her account. It was during this visit that EFCC officials allegedly swooped in and arrested the social media commentator, a move that many have described as unjustified and aggressive.
In a video posted to Instagram, VDM’s brother shared alarming claims about the conditions of his detention. He stated that both VDM and an unnamed associate sustained serious injuries during the arrest and were denied medical attention despite their condition.
“We’ve gone through the necessary channels. They have refused to let VDM and the other go or get treated because the information reaching us was that they were badly injured,” the brother said with visible concern.
He also raised questions about the motives behind the EFCC’s actions, hinting at a possible agenda targeting his brother. “I don’t know the agenda EFCC has against VDM. But whatever this is, GTBank and the EFCC know how this will end,” he added, suggesting that the family may pursue legal or public actions to secure his release and justice.
As of the time of writing this report, neither the EFCC nor GTBank has released an official statement addressing the allegations or clarifying the circumstances surrounding the arrest. This silence has only fuelled speculation and public outrage.
VDM, known for his blunt takes on social issues and frequent online activism, has built a large following for speaking out against injustice and corruption. His current situation has drawn sympathy and renewed concerns over the freedom of expression in Nigeria.
